Factory reset nest protect

I have tried on MANY occasions to hold the button to get the blue light to perform a reset but it does nothing - except sound a practice alarm thing for a few seconds. It doesn't matter if I hold it for 10 seconds or a minute. I've removed the batteries in an attempt to kill it but as soon as i replace them... it starts the beeping again..
